United Polaris Lounge San Francisco: Worth Arriving Two Hours Early
Hands-on review of the United Polaris Lounge at SFO's international terminal: the sit-down restaurant, shower suites, nap pods, and who gets in.
Sample post: text and images are placeholders demonstrating the lounge review layout.
There are only six Polaris Lounges in the world, and San Francisco’s is frequently rated the best of them. Flying Polaris business class to Tokyo NRT, I arrived three hours early and worked through the lounge from end to end.
Who Gets In
The bar is set considerably higher than a regular United Club:
- Same-day travel in long-haul international business or first class on United or a Star Alliance carrier
- Departing or connecting passengers only — Star Alliance Gold status alone does not qualify
- No guests (first class passengers may bring one)
The Dining Room

This is what separates a Polaris Lounge from an ordinary one: a true sit-down, made-to-order restaurant. The signature braised short rib with mashed potatoes is close to steakhouse quality, and the wine list offers four or five California cabernets. If you plan to sleep through the flight, dining here before boarding is the optimal play.
Facility Highlights
- Showers: 8 suites with Cowshed amenities (of Soho House fame) and strong water pressure; expect a waitlist at peak times.
- Nap pods: 6 semi-private daybeds with earplugs and blankets; wake-up calls available.
- Bar: a staffed cocktail bar — try the San Francisco-themed Fog Cutter.
Verdict
If your itinerary qualifies, this lounge is worth arriving two hours early for. Have dinner on the ground and save the flight for sleep — it changes the long-haul business class experience entirely.
